Fortress Wertheim

The Staufer emperors originally built the fortress in the 12thcentury. It became the seat of the Earl of Wertheim and today, it is one of the largest and most beautiful fortress ruins in all of Germany. The fortress was partially destroyed in 1619 by a large gunpowder explosion. During the 30-year War, cannonballs heavily damaged the fortress. The fortress is now the property of the city of Wertheim and is a favorite destination. From the moat, there is a fantastic view of the riverbeds of the Main and Tauber rivers and you can almost touch the Spessart and Odenwald forests from here.
