Closed from Christmas until February and on Good Friday

The permanent exhibit has at its core rare and precious pieces from the Catholic parish, the City of Gerolzhofen, and the Würzburg diocese. The exhibit highlights the intellectual and spiritual roots of Franconia.

The Museum “Art and Spirit of the Gothic” is located in the Johanniskapelle Chapel that was constructed in 1497 next to the City Church in Gerolzhofen, as well as in the adjacent Baroque Mesnerhaus. The artistic development in Franconia during the Gothic period can be experienced at this unique museum. On exhibit are pieces from the Catholic parish Gerolzhofen, items on loan from a number of museums, and pieces from the art collection of the Würzburg diocese. The art department of the Würzburg diocese designed the exhibits. The exhibits and interpretive displays allow visitors to understand the (late) Gothic period and how it impacts the Würzburg diocese to this day. The visitor gets to explore the spirit of the Gothic and especially Gothic piety, and how it influenced the art of the period. There are sculptures and reliefs from well-known artists, such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Hans Schäufelin, as well as wood board paintings, bells, a Gothic Bible, and liturgical vestments.
