The papermaker Johann Follmer took over the operation of the mill alongside the Bischbach Creek in 1853. The mill stayed in that family until 1975. After extensive, publicly financed renovation work, the Papiermühle in Homburg was opened in 1997 as a museum. In 1999, the workshop of Johannes Follmer, a fifth generation papermaker, was added to the collection.

Different papermaking techniques and the habits and living spaces of Homburg papermakers are on display.
